Growing up in Plaquemines Parish, life moved at a steady pace. Our communities were close-knit, our traditions deeply rooted, and the values we carried were often learned through experience rather than instruction. For me, one of the most formative experiences of my youth came during my time on the football field at Buras High School in 1966.
At the time, none of us were thinking about life lessons or character development. We were simply a group of young men trying to compete, improve, and represent our school with pride. Yet the discipline demanded by football had a way of quietly shaping us. Practices were long and demanding, and success was never guaranteed. Each day required focus, effort, and the willingness to push beyond what felt comfortable.
Those early experiences taught me something valuable about perseverance. On the field, you quickly learn that setbacks are inevitable. A missed play, a tough opponent, or a difficult game can challenge your confidence. But football also teaches you that resilience is built by continuing to show up, keep working, and trusting that progress comes through persistence.
As the years passed, I began to realize how much those lessons carried into the rest of my life. The determination we learned as teenagers later became the same determination required in professional school, in building a career, and in serving the community. Whether facing demanding responsibilities or unexpected obstacles, the mindset remained the same: approach the challenge with discipline, patience, and steady resolve.
Looking back now, I recognize that the scoreboard was never the most meaningful measure of that season. Wins and losses fade with time, but the character forged through hard work and shared effort endures. The values we developed, responsibility, perseverance, and respect for those working beside us, became guiding principles that extended far beyond the football field.
For many of us, that season represented more than a moment in our youth. It became a foundation for how we would approach the rest of our lives.
